The history of Real Foods
Originally created in 1963 to feed the ‘Aldermaston Ban the Bomb’ protesters, Real Foods began importing macrobiotics from Japan and Belgium, back before miso and seaweed were so popular! This grew into a wholesale mail-order business based in our Broughton street store, the same place our international web shop operates from today. Click here for more Real history.
Times may have changed, but the quality, nutritious ingredients we stock haven’t. We pride ourselves in offering healthy wholesome food at affordable prices. From dried essentials like lentils and rice , to a wide range of organically grown fresh fruit and veg . As the whole foods market has grown, we are now able to offer thousands of healthy (and a few indulgent ) products from the very best food producers locally and around the world.
Looking to the future
We realise how important it is to do our bit for the planet and generations to come. At our Tollcross store, we offer ‘Real Refills ’, a refill service for body and household cleaning products. Just pop in with a container, and one of our friendly staff members will fill it for you. A great way to reduce our impact on the world, refilling takes another piece of plastic out of circulation. The brands we stock are eco-friendly, which means you know keeping your house clean isn’t destroying the world.
Agnieszka, our Tollcross shop manager
Our refillable products don’t stop there; bring a tub in store with you our team can fill it with our wide range of loose products. This includes muesli , oats , and dried essentials like rice and flour. Our own branded dried products are packed in cellulose packaging, which biodegrades in the compost.
Located just a stones throw from the Meadows, our Tollcross store is easy to reach by foot, bus, or bike . Not able to come into the store at the moment? Order online for delivery or click and collect .
The world is a very different place from 1981, but our commitment to quality, low waste food hasn't changed. Happy Birthday to our Tollcross store, we hope to welcome you there again soon.
Like our Broughton Street shop, our Tollcross shop (shown above) is open 7 days a week, all year round.
