About Organic Grenadier Cooker Apples
Organic Grenadier Cooker Apple. Ideal for apple pies, the grenadier is not the most attractive of apples - it is pale to mid yellowish-green, often with a pronounced ribbed or lumpy effect. The grenadier is transformed by cooking however, it easily cooks down to cream-coloured puree with a superb apple flavour. Grenadier is also a good base for apple jam.
Not much information is available on the origins of Grenadier, it was discovered during the mid-19th century in England and was quite widely grown by the end of that century. It's a fairly rare apple to find now, but it's extremely prized for cooking down into creamy sharp sauces and tangy pies. One of the most foolproof cultivars to grow it likes temperate weather and has good disease resistance. The grenadier keeps well once cooked and can be frozen.
Apples are excellent sources of fibre, both soluble and insoluble, meaning the old phrase 'an apple a day will keep the doctor away' isn't far wrong, they will help keep your digestive system regulated. Apples also contain an array of nutrients, find out more in our article on apples here.
